Hmmm... to my ears, it's absolutely Pigpen, but okay.

Even if I'm wrong, another discrepancy is: if Pigpen was not there, why was anybody even thinking about going into Alligator? I think a plausible explanation is that the tape we have is not really 10/12/68.

Know the show well, but don't recall this at all...hmmm.

Not saying it's not there, esp if elb's heard it too, but which source? I had a radio broadcast version for yrs.

Pig is defn absent, likewise on 10-13, and they played shows "around" these dates w/out Bob and Pig ("heart/hart beats") and did alligator but sans vocals, right?

Nonetheless, they did the same basic show both nights, so I think your explanation (not THE show) is worth pursuing...

Just listened; you're right...defn there, but so far in the bk grd I can only hear the "I was" and it's pig like, but not sure...

???

Hey Tell,

Listen to The Eleven from about 10 seconds to the end, crank up your volume all the way.

Looks like LiA and I have the same take on it; it's someone else, and since they did "do" Alligator wout Pig at the time, albeit rarely, it doesn't have to be the case that he was there...

The voice, listening to this version, doesn't strike me as anything but Pig like, not a situation where I say "that's him!", which I feel I can always do for Jer/bob/phil...FWIW.

Yeah, and the voice is so faint that if I picture Bob saying it, it sounds plausible. The intonation definitely sounds Pig-like but it *could* be Bob.

I agree with you about it is interesting that Alligator was even brought up. To me it may mean they were thinking about moving on without Pig and even if he was with his significant other (i forget her name, sorry), that his future in the band was uncertain at this time. We think of Alligator as a Pig tune, but it is really a Hunter tune and the music rocked, so why wouldn't they consider still playing it, with or without lyrics?

It is hard to think that this is a different night than the rest of the first set. Clearly there are no keyboards in the Dark Star or the rest of the set. So where was Pig up until this comment?

like i said, i can't tell who it is who said it.

That's true - there aren't keyboards in Dark Star. That weakens my hypothesis that it's from a different show where Pigpen was present.

At this point, the most reasonable explanation is that they were planning to do Alligator without Pigpen, but I still find that profoundly odd and interesting in its own right. Alligator without Pigpen?!!?! If only they had remembered to make the transition - we might have gotten Bob singing "Creepy alligator comin all around the bend..." Bizarre.
